Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things

Just after Cataclysm came out I decided it was time to take a break from WoW. I had been playing since Vanilla and was just downright bored. After nearly two years away from the game I found myself curious about the new expansion. Pandas!? I mean, there are so many possibilities for Blizzard to turn into content, but I didn’t think it would be the Pandaren. Alas, it was, and I was finding myself itching to know more. I finally relented and bought the expansion and fired up my WoW account once again.

Some things hadn’t changed, others were incredibly different. For people who are coming back to the game, here are some things I learned either by accident or with the help of some friends that you might want to learn about too.

  1. Core Abilities Tab – This tab tells you about your most important spells, and when you should use them. Having been away for a while I found this tab to be awesome at refreshing my memory at how to play the various classes. You can find this under your profession/spell book page.
  2. What’s Changed Tab – There’s a tab that explains what recent changes have been made to your class. I’m one of those people that usually reads the patch notes in depth, but if I wanna get lazy about it I’m glad that this tab is there.
  3. Dungeon Journal – It’s like Atlas Loot, but also explains boss abilities, and information about a dungeon in addition to listing the possible loot. Extra bonus, it has filters to narrow down not only your class, but your spec, too! You can view this by pressing Shift+J.
  4. Pet/Mount Journal – There was a tab for this before, but now it’s got it’s own journal. In addition to simply being a place to access all your collections, it’s also the interface for pet battling. You can access this by pressing Shift+P.
  5. AOE Looting – This is one of those things I had to figure out. I was killing groups of mobs, but could only loot one. Gone are the days of looting every body, now it’s just one and done!
  6. Pet Battles – It’s like Pokemon, but in WoW! Remember all those vanity pets you collected up over the years? Now you get to battle other pets! You can even capture new pets in the wild. It even has a host of achievements to go along with it all.
  7. Daily Quests – Ok, daily quests aren’t new. In fact, they aren’t generally a favorite either, but the cap is now gone… and I have one friend who called this the “Expansion of Dailies” and I’d have to agree.
  8. Scenarios – It’s like a mini dungeon, but only requires 3 people, has a really short queue, and rewards you with gold and Valor points. These are great options for people who want to do something outside of the usual dungeon crawl.
  9. All the Usual Changes – All those things you expect to see in a new expansion such as new dungeons, gear, abilities, locations, profession changes, et all. I would love to list them all here, but that is something I’d like to expand upon more in another post.

For all that has changed, the game is still the same at heart. It’s a place to be social, have fun, and explore the lore that is Warcraft. I’m glad to be back and if you’re thinking about coming back, don’t forget about those Scrolls of Resurrection, if you qualify, you can automatically have a toon leveled to 80 for you. I’ll see you out in the World.

Relapsing Addict

Hello World!

It’s been a very long time. For anyone checking back in that may have read in the past, thank you for checking up on me. For those of you who don’t know me, there’s a little bit of a story for you. I used to blog. It started with AltohoicMom, which evolved to Altoholics R Us. Twice my blog was hacked, and the second time I was unable to recover all the data. This was so infuriating, that I gave up blogging. Eventually, just after Cata released, I gave up on WoW, too. School, work, kids, and life in general kept me busy and I was content to stay without WoW for a while. However, I’ve finished my school program and currently am unemployed, so I’ve found time for WoW again, and with WoW, I found myself wanting to write again.

I don’t think I’ll start off as involved as I left off, but I’ll get there. For now I want to focus on the changes for players who may just be returning or those who are just starting out in Panda Land. I haven’t reworked my UI yet, and I haven’t gotten to play all my characters yet, but I have done enough that I feel I have a leg to stand on. So please do check in, I’ve got some great ideas for your reading pleasure!

This time around I’m letting WordPress host the site, as apparently I am not the greatest at ensuring the security of my own site. Maybe I’ll get up to self hosted later, but for now we’re stuck with WordPress themes. Sorry for that but I’ll do what I can with it. Regardless welcome back to Altoholics R Us, I’m excited and you should be too!

Achievement Spam

It was yet another busy week for me and the guildies at <Abyss>. I have two more resets to finish gearing up the guild for the 25 mans we should be doing.  We spent the week taking two groups into Naxx 10. The first group got four bosses down, and the second group got 12. Why did one do so much better than the other? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m gonna guess it was luck of the draw and the route each group choose to take through the instance. I lead the second group and took them down spider first, then plauge, then construct and finally military. The other group started with the military wing. I’d assume that’s part of it. The other part would have been the gear levels of those involved. Our tanks and healers were already geared to begin with, whereas the other group had a healer and a tank that need some more lovin’.

I did spend the day and ran that healer through 6 heroics though, so she’s much better off then she was. Overall just on runs I did, I saw more than 40 upgrades go out to guildies who needed them. Already I can see vast improvement of our DPS. I’m very proud of them for working so hard in only 1 week’s time.

So in between the massive heroics each day and a Naxx group going in daily, I found time to grind out my Argent Dawn rep to net me a title, and then I finished off my gnomer rep for a title there, too. On top of the Naxx achievements I didn’t have, it was a bit of spam this week. Now I’m focusing on Sporggar rep, and then I’ll move on to the other netural to exalted grinds I need for that title, as well. So far, I’m 20 factions into the 40 I’d like to eventually have.

20 Factions, Woot!

20 Factions, Woot!

Finally, as a guild we’re beginning to see what we’ve got, and getting to know each other. We did lose two DC’ers already, but everyone else seems to be going pretty strongly. Theres two or three that are being a little bit stubborn about the gear grind we’re having to do, but otherwise, everyone else seems to be on the same page. So, two more weeks of grinding, and off to 25s we go!

But Mom, All the Bloggers are Doin’ It!

So there’s a meme goin’ around that’s been a sort of craze lately… Gnomes are doin it, Banana’s are doin it, Hell even QQers, Wanna-be Hordies, and Gun Lovers are doin it. And lets not forget the Romantics, the Flower Lovers, The Married, The Raged, The Knotty, The Corner Lurkers, The Numerous Annas, and yes, even the Matticus’ of the World are doin it, too.

And Damnit, I hate being left out.

So here’s my shot:

Bronze Drake

Bronze Drake

That’s a bronze drake from the timed culling of stratholme event. I was quite excited to have won it, but didn’t get the chance to try it out until we went to Naxx, when I snapped this screenshot. You are supposed to tag someone for this, but seeing as the list above includes nearly every blogger I know, I’m just gonna let this one slide.

Love is in the Air

Happy national everyone gets laid Valentine’s Day. It’s a day of love, of kindness, and of expressing one’s self. For me, this holiday is usually fairly unobserved, except for taking our children with us to dinner. But for some people, the day is a big deal. Blizzard, for as long as I can remember, has always had the Valentines Day event, but this is the first year we have achievements for it. As you may know, a lot of people are going for the “What a Long Strange Trip it’s Been…” meta achievement. I’m not, personally… however it does effect me all the same. Why you may ask? Well, you see, I am a Draenei Paladin…. and apparently, there are not many of those on my server. I’ve been told we’re just about as elusive as a Troll Rogue… so everytime I’m in a major city, I end up looking like this:

wowscrnshot_021109_212426Which really isn’t that big a deal, I just wonder if those petals will ever come out of my hair. So, everyone is in the spirit of love right? NO! There are some heartbroken fools out there that would do just about anything to spurn you, even been as crazy as to ninja a FROZEN ORB?! Yeah, you heard right… I suppose if you’re gonna ninja something…. take the least valuable item you can right? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned right? Too bad this one’s a dude…

I Love You, Too!

Did you miss me? I’ve been around just incredibly busy. I’ve got a whole new fresh website for my guild all put together and running live (http://www.damagecontrolguild.net) And I’ve been busy running raids (we got Gothik, this week) and recruiting (We still need healers and ranged DPS, interested? Click the guild link to apply). Also, I’ve been enjoying my alts, particularly, my Death Knight. She’s level 70 now, and thanks to a little post about not mashing buttons, she’s making progess rather quickly. Now my guild knows who my alts are, but I don’t imagine that I’ve been on the server long enough for many to know my name, let alone my alts.

Goldfish and Hearts

Goldfish and Hearts

So imagine my surprise when I log into my DK to find an email waiting for her from a guy named Lemonaid. Orginally, I assumed he was just a guildie being nice… however, he’s not. He’s a level 80 guild leader of his own, and one I’ve never heard of before. So I wrote him back, and I said I loved him too, and asked if we ever met before…. in which he replied with ANOTHER goldfish saying that no, we haven’t met, but he loved me anyways… cute I thought, So… I tossed out another email, gave him a happy fun rock and told him to spread the happiness around… we’ll see what he comes up with later today when I log in.

Sarcasm Abound

Is it bad when Garen is posting more often to my blog than I am? Naaaaahhhh we’re married, that means I get half the credit! Anyways, here’s a post from Garen that is totally full of sarcasm, don’t take anything he says to heart… (I never do) – Andrea

I was torn on what to title this post, so I have decided to use them both. I proudly present:

Youre Doing It Wrong!

You're Doing It Wrong!

WORDS IN WOW THAT ANGER ME
Or
YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

I do not consider myself to be a scholar by any means, however, there are a number of words that just anger me when people decide to either not pronounce them properly, or just don’t give a rats behind.

I intend to show you how you are, in fact, doing it wrong.

I give you the following:

-MEDIVH-
Medivh is the guy who let the horde into Azeroth. Some people consider him to be a pretty irritating guy. Others think he payed for his mistake in Warcraft III when he setup the whole Mt. Hyjal thing with Thrall and Jaina.
The reason that this word pisses me off so much is because people do not pronounce it correctly. In written type, the name Medivh can be butchered to no end. However, if you have game sounds turned on, or have played Warcraft 3 or Warcraft 2, then you know the truth.
It is not “Med Vuh”.
It is not “Mee duh vuh”.
It is not  “Med Eee Vee”.
The proper pronunciation is “Meh-Deeve”
The next time someone screws this up, smack them, kick them from the guild, educate them, then publicly ridicule them on the realm forums.

-SHATTRATH-
Shattrath is the city of refugees that is stuck in the corner of Terokkar forest. You can’t PvP there, but you can throw yourself from the aldor rise and successfully kill yourself.
The reason that this work pisses me off so much is again, pronunciation. I look at this word and see something very simple. Let’s do a breakdown. Shall we?

SHATTRATH
SHATT – RATH

People call this city “Shatt” for short. It’s easier. It has a good flow to it. People enjoy doing it. So, tell me, how the hell do these same well educated people look at this work and see Shatharuh city?
That’s right, “Shath-uh-ruh”.
WHAT THE HELL!?
The next time someone screws this up, smack them, kick them from the guild, educate them, then publicly ridicule them on the realm forums.

-DALARAN-
This is a reletivily new one that pisses me off. The city has been in the game since day one. However, people have only recently begun to butcher the name. Blizzard uses the Long “A” sound, the short “A” sound, and the “Uh” sound for “A’s” all the time. The trick is knowing when to use what.
So, lets look at this word.
Dalaran.
I’ll give you a hint. There are who long A’s and an UH.
The proper pronunciation is as follows.
DAL. That’s like “HAL” from A space odyssey: 2001.
UH. That’s like “Uh, wut?”
RAN. Like…. Ran. If you try and read too deep into that one, you need kicked in the back of the knee.
Don’t say it like you are English, or Australian, or a Kiwi, or any other breathy sounding nationality. That is, unless you really ARE one of those nationality, then it just sounds awesome! Seriously, ask an Australian to say “Water”. It’s great! But like I was saying…
It’s an AAAH. Kinda like your screaming. If you don’t understand me yet, get in my vent server and I’ll say it for you. REPETEDLY!

-REAGENT-
This one makes me want to claw my eyes out.
It’s a Re-“A”-gent.
Not a rEEjent.
Not a rEE”g”ent.
It’s a  RE “A” GENT.
RAWR!

-ROGUE-
Last time I checked, Blizzard had an age limit to play this game (I could be wrong), but I’m pretty sure you should kinda have some knowledge of how to spell if you are going to use the chat function.
I’m going to be blunt here, I apologize in advance.
ROGUE = Sneaky thief guy who can sap, steal, and pops lock boxes. Usually picked last for groups.
ROUGE = Powdery make up that some women put on their faces so that rich guys will buy them food so that boobs can be squeezed!
Got it?
You screw it up again and I’ll kick you in the shin so hard your dog will limp from sympathy.

-SCHOLOMANCE-
Scholomance was a school of magic before the invasion of the horde and the arrival of the scourge. Back in Vanilla WoW, a lot of players complained about Scholomance simply because it was a pain in the butt to get any good gear out of there for your specific class. This meant that EVERYONE was running the place. Since everyone was running the place, a lot of people were pronouncing it wrong. This is why I hate this word. Now, I don’t REALLY hate it. I like this word a lot when it is pronounced properly. It makes me smile. But when it gets butchered… I just want to SCREAM!
Scholomance. Everyone gets the “MANCE” part right. Kudos to everyone for that.
But, the Scholo is the part that makes me cringe.
SCH can make a “SH” sound in some cases. But, not in this one.
The SCH makes the SK sound that you get from the word School.
The scholo (being a school after all) almost sounds like school when pronounced properly, but it is actually…
SKO-LOW-MANCE.
Easy, right?
Right!

There are a few other words in WoW that really anger me, but I have chosen to not chronicle them at this time. If you feel the need to get into vent with me, I’ll be happy to discuss words and such. But right now, this is a good starter.
DON’T SCREW THEM UP! Or I’ll kick you from the guild, educate you, then ridicule you on the forums!
